Heel Pain Can Be Treated!

Do you suffer from heel pain when you get up in the morning? If so, you should seek the professional help of your podiatrist and have a proper diagnosis performed. Heel pain can be caused by several different foot-related conditions.

You use your feet differently when you walk than you do when you run. When you walk, your feet do not experience too much impact. Conversely, when you run, you feel almost three times more impact in your feet. Therefore, having different shoes for the different types of exercise is vital to the overall health of your feet and legs. There are four factors to remember while buying shoes. First, a running shoe should have a more flexible sole than a walking shoe. Next, the heel of a running shoe should be slightly elevated, while the heel of a walking shoe should be flat. A running shoe should additionally give you less motion control than a walking shoe, as your foot moves more while running. Finally, a running shoe should be lighter than a walking shoe, so you can move quickly. If you have any questions about what shoe to use, be sure to contact a podiatrist.

For more information about walking shoes versus running shoes, consult with Dr. David Ungar from Personal Foot Care. Our doctor can measure your feet to determine what your needs are and help you find an appropriate pair of footwear.

Foot Health: The Differences between Walking & Running Shoes

There are great ways to stay in shape: running and walking are two great exercises to a healthy lifestyle. It is important to know that running shoes and walking shoes are not interchangeable. There is a key difference on how the feet hit the ground when someone is running or walking. This is why one should be aware that a shoe is designed differently for each activity.

You may be asking yourself what the real differences are between walking and running shoes and the answers may shock you.

Differences

Walking doesn’t involve as much stress or impact on the feet as running does. However, this doesn’t mean that you should be any less prepared. When you’re walking, you land on your heels and have your foot roll forward. This rolling motion requires additional support to the feet.

Flexibility – Walking shoes are designed to have soft, flexible soles. This allows the walker to push off easily with each step.

There are several factors that exist which may cause falling. These often include poor vision, wearing shoes that fit incorrectly, or feeling unbalanced while walking. To prevent falling, it is beneficial to have an annual vision test performed, in addition to reviewing any medications that are currently being taken. When a gentle exercise routine is frequently practiced, the body may become stronger, and this may help to prevent falling. Research has shown the importance of installing grab bars in the shower and surrounding areas, in addition to reducing any tripping hazards that are present in the house. If you would like additional information about how falling may affect the feet, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. David Ungar from Personal Foot Care. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Babies feet are interesting to observe. They are soft and flexible until the bones become stronger. Research has indicated it is beneficial for young children to walk barefoot indoors, as this helps to strengthen the feet. When the toes grasp the floor, the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the feet become stronger, and enable the feet to develop normally. It is helpful to measure your child's feet approximately every other month up to the age of three years old so the correct size shoes can be fitted on their rapidly growing feet. The risk of potential skin conditions occurring may be reduced when the shoes are aired out overnight, and clean cotton socks are worn. Most babies are born with flat feet, and the arch will normally be present when the child is six or seven years old. If you notice walking abnormalities or if the arch in the foot has not properly developed, it is advised to consult with a podiatrist who can examine your child’s feet.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. David Ungar of Personal Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Research has indicated there are benefits from working while standing or moving about for the majority of the day. As each step is taken, circulation may improve, and blood glucose levels are positively affected. Additionally, standing and walking can contribute to cardiovascular health. It is helpful to rest the feet periodically during the day, and this may help to prevent possible foot pain. The feet can be properly stretched as the toes are pointed and flexed, and this is easily accomplished as the feet are resting. People in the nursing profession often have long hours, and their jobs have the potential to be physically demanding. It is recommended that shoes are alternated twice per year, and adding insoles may aid in providing maximum comfort. Please consult with a podiatrist if you would like additional information about proper foot care during the work day.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Dr. David Ungar from Personal Foot Care. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.
